  • While technical interviews for software developers are imperfect, they are a staple in the tech industry.
  • Experts shared their insight on the hard and soft skills engineers can prep to ace them anyway.

Technical interviews – where job applicants are expected to write code on a white board, spout algorithms from memory, or solve imaginary scenarios that have nothing to do with the actual job they’re applying for – are notoriously difficult.

Worse, they often feel ineffective: Only 31% of developers believe coding exams effectively test their aptitude, according to a report last year by recruiting firm Hired, while two-thirds said that most coding exams were irrelevant to their daily engineering jobs.

While many firms have admitted that the process is broken and have tried to improve it, most job seekers should still expect to face a typical technical interview as part of their application process – so it’s worth knowing a host of tips and resources to help prepare.
